BEVERLY — Historic District Commission unanimously designates 38 Standley Street buildings as preferably preserved. The Commission voted 6-0 to protect the main house, identified as a late first-period structure dated to 1718, and an accessory building that served as a shoe shop from 1800-1830, rejecting a demolition application from the Waring School. Chair William Finch and members noted the property's architectural significance, its associations with renowned zoologist Harold Jefferson Coolidge Jr., and its mid-century modern addition as evidence of successful sensitive rehabilitation.
The Commission also unanimously approved a letter of support for a CPA application to fund restoration work at Central Cemetery and Tomb House.
