Commission rejects nursing school building demolition delay; approves Hale Street renovation conditions

BEVERLY — Historic Districts Commission splits verdicts on two demolition delay applications. The commission unanimously deemed the 1916 nursing school building at 91 Herrick Street historically significant but rejected its designation as preferably preserved, allowing Northeast Hospital Corporation to proceed with demolition after determining the vacant building was unsafe and unreclaimable. The same commission unanimously designated the early 17th-century house at 824 Hale Street as preferably preserved and voted 6-0 to lift the demolition delay on the rear 20th-century addition under five specific conditions protecting the original core structure, permitting the owners to complete renovation work while preserving historic fabric.
