Beverly panel floats National Grid buyout study
Beverly's Deficit Reduction Committee floated a $150 million price tag for buying out National Grid.
Other Committee · Meeting of August 31, 2026
Beverly's Deficit Reduction Committee floated a $150 million price tag for buying out National Grid. Committee member John reported that a feasibility study and bond financing through the Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company could help Beverly become just the fifth Massachusetts community with its own municipal gas and electric utility. Another member, Lydia, said Beverly's paid summer day camps generate $350,000 to $400,000 a year, while free drop-off camps serve 753 registered children, warning that losing the recreation department's enterprise-fund status "would be absolutely detrimental to operations." Members also learned only three local institutions currently make PILOT payments to the city and discussed reviving a standing PILOT committee last active around 2008.
No votes were taken; the panel aims to hold its first public outreach meeting around Oct. 20.
